Mumbai Woman's Monthly Expenses of Rs 1.31 Lakh Spark Debate Over City's Rising Cost of Living

An IIM graduate's disclosure of spending Rs 1.31 lakh in a single month while living alone in Mumbai has sparked widespread discussion on social media. Living in Mumbai has long been associated with high expenses, but a recent monthly expense breakdown shared by IIM graduate Nandini Sethi has reignited discussions about the city's soaring cost of living. In an Instagram video, Sethi revealed that she spent Rs 1,31,277 in a single month, highlighting how living alone in Mumbai can become significantly expensive. She also clarified that the amount did not include any investments or savings, leaving many social media users surprised by the overall expenditure.

Sharing details of her June expenses, Sethi wrote, "Rs 1,31,277 in a single month. How much are your monthly expenses??" In the caption accompanying the video, she added, "PS: This doesn't even include any investments, why do people like this city so much?"

The largest share of her spending was allocated to housing after she recently moved into a new apartment. Sethi disclosed that her monthly rent was Rs 31,000. Since the apartment was unfurnished, she incurred additional setup costs, spending approximately Rs 25,000 on furniture. She also paid Rs 1,514 for deep cleaning her room and bathroom, Rs 10,400 for air conditioner installation, and Rs 980 for rented furniture for the living room and kitchen.

In addition to these expenses, she spent Rs 4,328 on repairing the water heater.

Her recurring monthly expenses also contributed substantially to the overall total. Sethi said she spent around Rs 5,800 on groceries, Rs 400 on a cook, Rs 1,200 on household assistance, and approximately Rs 11,250 on commuting to work.

Beyond essential household costs, she spent Rs 10,545 on weekend outings. Travelling back to her hometown, including flight tickets and cab fares, cost her Rs 15,350. She also allocated another Rs 10,000 to miscellaneous expenses, including shopping.

After calculating all expenditures, Sethi concluded, "This brings my total to Rs. 1,31,277 in a single month. I am still wrapping my head around how expensive this city is."

The video quickly gained attention across social media platforms, prompting widespread discussion about the increasing cost of living in Mumbai. Many users compared the figures with their own monthly budgets and shared similar experiences.
